Presented by Dr. Ryan Witherspoon, Ph.D. Statistics show that 4-5% of American romantic relationships are consensually non-monogamous in some way, including various manifestations of open relationships, polyamory, swinging, and more. Clients in these relationships frequently fear stigmatization and pathologization from mental health professionals, and although many seek therapy for unrelated reasons, they nonetheless want to feel that this often crucial aspect of their lives and identities is understood by their therapist. This presentation will give clinicians a pragmatic overview of the major types of consensual non-monogamy, with a focus on clinically-relevant factors and frameworks to help therapists conceptualize and intervene with non-monogamous individuals and relationships.
