Music Therapy: A Binaural Frontier

The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM)

AmyLynn Dimaano, MT-BC, CADC-II

This presentation will include interactive demonstration and explanation detailing what clinical Music Therapy is and why it’s effective as an adjunct to conventional methodology.  This includes: Binaural foundations of how the human brain processes music and why this helps people in the therapeutic process of change. More specifically,  delineation of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), a specialty within the field of Music Therapy, its origins, research and efficacy for patients that are not finding success with traditional therapy. Particularly efficacious for treating trauma, grief, addictions and Depression, the Bonny Method is an imagery and music based therapeutic process that allows the patient to have an interactive experience in the treatment session itself. It can reveal previously untapped personal wisdom from the unconscious that often empowers the client outside the treatment setting to feel and behave differently.

Additionally, this presentation will address how “music IN therapy” can be used by clinicians to enhance other forms of therapy, safely, within their scope of practice.

Objectives:

1.  Understand the binaural foundations of Music Therapy in any context (includes individual and group settings)

2.  Comprehensive understanding of clinical Music Therapy as an adjunct therapy in Mental Health, specifically when to refer to a Music Therapist

3.  Basic foundations of what the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery (GIM) is as a treatment modality

4. How to use music IN therapy as a traditional therapy clinician, within your scope of practice, safe interventions
