Descriptive Narrative:
Working with teens can be FUN, exciting and rewarding. Have no fear our teens have not lost their spice, even with all the life changes recently! For teens, right in the middle of critical development, the pandemic has been incredibly impactful. During this presentation we will explore The GenZ experience, and address the ways anxiety is showing up for our teens today. How to make therapy fun, engaging and active for both the teen and the clinician. As well as key strategies for rapport building, connection and interpreting their tiktok language. Utilizing the newly release book Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety, A Practical Guide to Manage Stress, Ease Worry and Find Calm by Jamie Roberts LMFT. This presentation will touch on the what Mindfulness Practice is, but will primarily focus on how to introduce and engage teens in Mindfulness. The emphasis will be on Teen Anxiety and utilizing Mindfulness as the tool of support.
Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify 4 unique stressors for today’s teens.
2. Participants will gain insight on 4 areas that anxiety impacts the teen experience and how mindfulness can be implemented (Body, Thoughts, Emotions, Behaviors).
3. Participants will receive 5 mindfulness activities that can be applied in the session immediately.
4. Presenter will demonstrate 3 key components for developing rapport with teens in the therapeutic setting.
About the presenter:
Jamie Roberts (she/her) is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, as well as the author of the book Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety, a practical guide to manage stress, ease worry and find calm. Jamie is the founder of Equilibrium Counseling Services, a teen and young adult mental health center in Southern California. ECS, is a place where all identities and brains are celebrated, with the goal of building confidence in oneself. Jamie is an Inland Empire native who received her B.A. in Psychology from UCLA. She then attended Antioch University where she received a M.A. in Clinical Psychology. Jamie has been a therapist since 2012 and has worked in community mental health, on school campuses, and in private practice. Jamie specializes in working with Neuroqueer youth, and has a tender heart for middle schoolers. She utilizes creative arts, movement and non-verbal tools to connect and engage with teen of all neurotypes. She is the Neurodivergent Therapist throughout social media and is an active speaker on Neurodivergent and Teen topics. Jamie is inspired by the quote “become the person you needed when you were younger” by Ayesha Saddiqi.
