Descriptive Narrative:

Don’t make A  MESS out of the Talk; Alcohol, drugs, Social Media and etc. addresses the communication missteps both of therapists and parents in having discussions with clients (including but not exclusively with teenagers) about potentially problematic behaviors and life choices. Using the letters: A, M, E, S, S, the training will show how well-intended communications become unintentionally dismissive, off-putting, and cause loss of credibility, resulting in the opposite of desired consequences. And guidance to communicate to promote more credibility and clearer direction.

Objectives:

Upon successfully attending and completing this presentation participants will be able to:

1.  Participants will identify how labeling a person as an addiction or having an addiction distracts from rapport and therapy.

2. Participants will learn to name the four harms criteria as an alternative to diagnostic labeling.

3. Participants will identify the 5 D’s of Diagnosis that guide intervention.

4. Participants will identify five approaches that are dismissive, disrespectful, and insulting that hinder intervention, and the effective alternative positive strategy.
