EMDR: healing unprocessed memories that create disturbance and dysfunction

EMDR: healing unprocessed memories that create disturbance and dysfunction

Summary:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is a theoretical orientation that has become widely known or heard of in our profession; however many are still confused by what the theory is about and how it works. In this presentation, we will explore what EMDR is and how it works, debunk myths, and clarify information on how EMDR is used today and where the research is going in the future. We will look at the theoretical orientation’s eight phases of treatment (client history and treatment planning, client preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation); the protocols (past, present, future, and recent event) and forms of bilateral stimulation (eye movement, taps, tones). We will explore Dr. Francine Shapiro’s AIP (adaptive information processing) model which is the framework in which the eight phases and past, present, and future protocols are worked through.  We will review options on how to become trained and/or certified in EMDR, and resources to learn more. In the end, professionals will have a better grasp on what EMDR is, who would be a good candidate for it, and how to refer a client to a professional trained or certified in EMDR and how to seek training in EMDR.

With this training, the educational goal is to clinically obtain a better understanding of the EMDR theoretical orientation to be able to identify appropriate client candidates for treatment and understand how to seek appropriate training in EMDR.

  • Definition and overview of history of EMDR
  • Overview of EMDR Adaptive Information Processing model
    • 8 phases of treatment
    • 3 pronged protocols
    • BLS forms
  • Appropriate clients for EMDR (ages, populations, diagnosis)
    • How to explain EMDR to a client
    • How to refer a client to an EMDR therapist
    • Recognizing signs that a client will need an EMDR therapist specializing in dissociation and/ or parts work.
  • EMDR Resources
    • Where to find more information on EMDR and its research
    • Where to become trained in EMDR (and difference in trained vs certified)
    • Information on various protocols for specialized treatment (chronic pain, dissociation/ parts work, addiction, couples, first responders, military, performance enhancement , Children)

Learning Objectives:

1. Define EMDR therapy and identify the 8 phases of treatment

2. List 3-pronged protocol

3. List 3 forms of bilateral stimulation

4. Identify 4 resources to obtain more information on EMDR and training opportunities.

Bio:

Nicole Serrano is a bilingual licensed marriage family therapist in the state of California that has over 5 years treating trauma across various settings such as in the home, hospital, community mental health agencies and private practice office for the children and adult populations. She has worked with children and families in wraparound program, and adults with chronic mental illness and substance abuse. She also previously worked with children, adults, and geriatrics at Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center.   Currently, Nicole has a private practice located in Rancho Cucamonga, CA where she serves adults for individual and couples therapy. Nicole is currently trained in EMDR and working towards certification. Nicole was trained in EMDR through the EMDR International Association. Nicole also serves couples and is trained in Gottman Method of Couples Therapy Level 2.
