Descriptive Narrative:
This presentation focuses on providing clinicians and mental health providers with an overview and understanding neurodivergency in the context of trauma informed care and nervous system function. It will explore such evidence-based practices such as poly vagal theory, safe and sound protocol listening therapy, and other nervous system based techniques to help clients achieve better nervous system regulation and symptom reduction. This presentation will also invite participants to examine neuronormative structures/systems and how they intentionally or unintentionally cause harm to neurodivergent clients, paying special focus to individuals with intersectionalities in other marginalized communities.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to::
1. Define neurodivergence and name at least three ways it is represented in the nervous system.
2. Define neuronormativity and list at least three ways it impacts neurodivergent individuals, including trauma in the nervous system.
3. Explain trauma informed, neurodivergent affirming care and list at least three paradigm shifts and how it helps reduce risks of more severe mental illness and suicide.
4. Define three key physiological aspects that show up in neurodivergent nervous systems.
5. Describe applied poly vagal theory and identify at least three strategies on how it can be applied to the treatment of neurodivergent clients.
