I hope you enjoyed Labor Day holiday weekend.  I went to visit my daughter in Sacramento and we enjoyed our time on the American River.  We went kayaking and stopped in old Sacramento for Gold Rush days, saw a Wild West show, Indian dancing, and watched a magic show. Afterwards we kayaked back down the river to my daughter’s apartment.  I really had a fun time and it was very relaxing. Now it’s time to focus back on work and the last quarter of the year.  I wanted to alert you to the peer presentation for the 2018 CAMFT annual conference.  The deadline for proposals is January 23, 2017.

The committee is especially interested in presentations on substance abuse and addictive behaviors. I presented at a couple of conferences a few years back. It was an enriching experience and I enjoyed meeting many colleagues from around the state. It actually can be a fun experience. Please also do not forget to register for the upcoming 2017 Annual Conference.  Sign up soon because spaces are going fast and some of the workshops are already sold out. This conference will be held at the Hilton in Los Angeles.  Additionally, there is another wonderful training opportunity coming this fall: CAMFT’s fall symposium November 12, 2016 at the San Ramón Marriott.

The IE CAMFT Board needs a few extra hands to help with setting up the room prior to the meeting and putting the room back after the meeting. If you can help, just show up about 45 minutes before the seminar and stay after the meeting to help. All members are also welcome to stay for the board meeting after the educational part of the meeting is over.

Are you or your office putting on a training, have a new workshop starting, a yoga group forming, or have a teen group going on in your office? Whatever you are doing let us know about it. We now have a resource table out in the lobby so be sure to stop to see what your fabulous colleagues are doing. Please bring your flyers and other support resources and share. It is difficult to stay informed about things in our communities so please share.

Reminder:  the IE 3000 club date is the third Saturday of each month. The next meeting will be held on September 17, 2016, the speaker will be Sherilyn Johnson, from County of Riverside Mental Health. She will be speaking on EMDR. The time will be 11:00 to 1:00 PM.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word “transition” as: “a passage from one state, stage, subject, or place to another, a: change; and b: a movement, development, or evolution from one form, stage, or style to another.” I was thinking about our clients and how they come to see us weekly and they are asking us to help them change, to adjust, to accommodate, garner insight, and transition from one perspective or feeling to another. As all of us know, change can be hard, stressful, and yet can also be exciting, hopeful, and freeing. I know that when I see growth within my clients, interns, students, my colleagues, and even myself I feel happy and hopeful and encouraged. Recently, it seems we have had a series of bad news locally and worldwide and sometimes I wonder if we are making a difference.

However, if I look into our world carefully I will find hope and growth and light. I find people, just regular people like you and me, doing wonderful acts of kindness and showing great compassion for the human race.  Sometimes it’s small, like helping a neighbor jump start their car. Other times it’s huge like sitting and being present while a little girl and her mother tell you about the suicide of their brother and son respectively, and how a kind police officer stayed with the little girl all night long singing songs, coloring pictures, and holding both mom and daughter in his arms until family from out-of-state could arrive to be with the family.

That kind of compassion rarely makes the news. What we as therapists do rarely makes the news but that doesn’t mean for a second that it does not matter.  I was teaching the other day and a couple of students came to me and asked my opinion of their dream to start two non-profits; one to help with the sex trafficking that would have a treatment and housing component and the other was a one-stop shop for services for CPS families: one or two places they could go to receive parenting skills, drug treatment, medical care, and have a visitation center. Their eyes sparkled and their voices were very excited about their possible dreams. I gave them counsel and encouragement. But they gave me more, the idea that hope is still out there, that we as humans want a better world for all, and that these young people will be part of the solution.

    Until next time

    Therapy and Community

Happy Summer, I hope you are finding a little time off to play in the sun, relax, or catch up on some pleasure reading.  I am starting a new book that so far is highly riveting it’s called Sharp Object by Gillian Flynn the same author that also wrote Gone Girl. This is a psychological thriller and even though I am only in chapter 3, it’s a hard book to put down. This a big departure from my business books I am often reading. Nevertheless, I hope you too are taking some personal time.

I wanted to again thank each one of you for the great work you do. With the news a few weeks ago about yet another tragic mass shooting that ultimately led to 49 young people losing their lives to senseless violence to this week’s shooting of another young black man by the police, it continues to be evident that we have a great deal of work that still needs to be done. Our community and world has too many people who are sad, depressed, anxious, feeling like they don’t matter, who sometimes are filled with hatred, feel unfairly treated, and become so disillusioned they lash out in highly destructive and often fatal ways. I know that my explanation is very simplistic but without therapists, I truly believe we would have more people acting out and taking lives. We help people with communication, gaining self-worth and self-respect. So I wanted to take a moment to really say thank you for what you do. What we all do matters a great deal!

This month there is no regular meeting but you are welcome to attend the Board Retreat, an extended board meeting. This year we are focusing on bylaws, board positions, and minor chapter business, but more importantly, it’s a time to enjoy each other’s company, network, have some fun and good food. Please join us on July 22, 2016 from 9:00 -1:00 PM. We will be hosted at Annette Compton’s beautiful home. If you want to be on the board, register on the website and the location will be sent to you in the email confirmation.

    Summer Work and Fun

Can you believe we are heading into summer in only a few days? Whew, where has the time gone?

I wanted to share with you a wonderful FREE resource for those wanting to build private practice. It’s called the Road to Success summit. It was created by Dr. Maelisa Hall, a wonderful colleague and friend. The topics included in this summit are:

    ·         Successfully increase profit and reduce time in your business with Casey Truffo

    ·         Successfully identify if coaching is a viable option for your practice with Kelly Higdon

    ·         Successfully use intuition to grow your practice with Keri Nola

    ·         Create a successful practice through community, not competition with Rajani Venkatraman Levis

    ·         Create a successful money mindset with Jo Muirhead

    ·         Grow your practice successfully by adding clinicians with Camille McDaniel

    ·         Create a successful website with Kat Love

    ·         Use video to successfully market your practice with Ernesto Segismundo

    ·         Use podcasts to successfully market your practice with Melvin Varghese

    ·         Use technology to serve your clients (without stress) with Roy Huggins

    ·         Use online counseling to broaden your practice with Clay Cockrell

    ·         Build a successful practice based on insurance with Samara Stone

    ·         Successfully quash your insurance fears with Barbara Griswold

    ·         Successfully prepare for subpoenas with Nicol Stolar

    ·         Successfully identify your ideal client with Agnes Wainman

    ·         Network your way to success with Allison Puryear

    ·         Create successful private practice systems with Stephan Adams

All of these folks are experts in their areas and I promise you will not be disappointed. You can reach this free resource by signing up at http://www.roadtosuccesssummit.com/

But hurry, the interviews are only up until the end of the month.

Also just a reminder that we are not having a regular meeting in July, but are having a summer “retreat” meeting.  We will be working on the bylaws, board positions, future topics, surprises, fun and other wonderful stuff. It is a longer meeting from 9-1.  Please attend and provide your input if you are a member of IE-CAMFT and want to be on the board. Please do RSVP on the website so we know how much food to provide.  This meeting will be in Claremont, not our usual place.

I hope you and your family have some fun times planned ahead for your summer.  I hope to have a few relaxing days and am even planning a few week long vacations over the summer!

    Until next time,

    Sherry

    Happy Spring!

In my yard the signs of spring are everywhere. My fruit trees have small fruit and some flowers, and my roses are happily producing an abundance of blooms. The butterflies are dancing around the yard and the finches sing to me each morning as I eat my breakfast on my patio.  I truly enjoy the spring time.  In my practice I help those with anxiety, and we often talk about being mindful and just “sitting in the moment.” Sometimes it’s hard for my clients to accomplish this task; however, I continue to remind them that it’s progress, not perfection, which is our journey in life.  I know that I too am not always as mindful as I should be. My practice demands my attention, as does my family and friends, and my own self-imposed “shoulds.”

My gratitude continues for the remarkable therapists from our community I get to meet and with whom I get to collaborate each month. I am always struck how each of you shines your light and opens your heart each day to clients in need.   Again I want to thank you for your service to our community.  I also want to thank Keyvan Geula who has graciously donated a camcorder to our chapter so we may record our presentations (with permission) and later post them to our CAMFT website.  The board has been discussing for months how to continue to bring more value to the members of our chapter.  Each month we have wonderful speakers who are subject matter experts and who share their insights with us. However, occasionally life gets in our way and we can’t make it to the meeting. It is the hope of the board that this would offer another alternative and would also allow for each of us to go back and listen again if we wish. At the present time we won’t be able to provide CEUs for the videos, but hopefully we may in the future.

Another change I would like to highlight is having network time after our regular monthly presentation.  Currently, we had that time set up for 8:30 AM. This has not been particularly well attended. That may be due to the distance or traffic in getting to the meeting.  So we thought let’s move the networking time from 11:00-11:30 AM. I really do not want any of you to miss out on the wealth of resources that each of you bring to the meeting.

The 3000 club continues to nurture our up-and-coming therapists and the presenters have also been of excellent quality. The next presentation will be by Lynn Flewelling on dream tending with clients on Saturday 28, 2016 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The address is 6840 Indiana Ave., Suite 275, Riverside, CA 92506. All are welcome.

    Until next time,

    Sherry

Inland Empire Board & Chapter Update

Have you ever considered volunteering some time to be on your local Inland Empire CAMFT Board? I can hear your objections “I don’t have time,” “I’m too busy,” “I don’t have anything to really contribute.” “I’m only an intern.” I would counter all through negative thoughts and say, “Rubbish!” Being a member of the CAMFT board is not hard nor is it very time consuming. I will acknowledge that it does take a few hours a month but honestly only a few. We all have something we can give.  I really would like you to think about it and come to a board meeting, talk to any board member about their job. My mother often would say, “Many hands make less work.” That is so true. Please share your gifts with our chapter it might make you even happier than you are right now; current research substantiates this and by volunteering you are prone to less depression--just another good reason to stay after the presentation! In order to encourage your participation, I have created a Top 10 List for you to consider:

The top 10 benefit list to volunteering for the Inland Empire CAMFT Board:

    1.       You receive high prestige from your family, friends and colleagues
    2.       You get to meet interesting people
    3.       You get to add the CAMFT logo to your website; increases free marketing and thus your  income
    4.       You get to be “in the know” before everyone else
    5.       You laugh a lot; and I mean a lot
    6.       Colleagues refer to you so your income increases
    7.       Your business Facebook page gets more likes
    8.       You stand out in a crowd
    9.       You have built-in case consulting colleagues with invaluable and priceless information
    10.   You help define what MFTs are in our community

With all sincerity, please consider just a few hours to help guide this chapter into even more greatness. If you want to speak to me about any board position you can email me at sherry@centralcentralCounsleingservices.net or call me (951) 323-2182 I would be happy to speak with anyone about the time commitments.

The Inland 3000 Club will again meet this month April 23, 2016 from 11:00-1:00.  The topic will be “Tools For Couples Therapy;” the presenter will be Dr. Catherine Wheeler; the location will be 6840 Indiana Ave. Ste. 275, Riverside, CA 92506.  Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP at 951-778-0230 so we know how much food to provide (however, if you are reading this late and did not RSVP, please come anyway.) Everyone is welcome; you do not need to be a member of CAMFT to attend.

I also wanted to update all of you on the San Bernardino incident last December. Our chapter has volunteered to provide limited free counseling. To date, we have connected 8 people to therapists in our area and we have provided 40 sessions of free therapy since January. Thank you all for your hard work, caring, and compassion you have shown to those in our community who were in need.  Our members continue to amaze me with their dedication to our field. I am humbled and proud to say we are MFTs.

    Until next time,

    Sherry Shockey-Pope, IE-CAMFT President
